As a mediator, you will support people through difficult situations, helping them to work collaboratively towards a mutual solution that eases the pain and pressure of a relationship ending. Whether you work primarily with divorcing couples or the breakdown of corporate agreements, you’ll be integral in helping participants to pick up the pieces and move on to a new chapter. One of the key benefits of mediation as opposed to other forms of conflict resolution is the capacity for privacy that court-based methods don’t allow. As a result, more and more disputes are turning to mediation to try to solve things rather than going straight to court.
Mediators can be employed by a wide range of businesses such as:
- Local and national governments
- Schools, universities and other educational institutions
- Legal service providers
- Insurance companies
- Mediation and arbitration corporations
As a mediation graduate, you could even start your own business as a freelance mediator and enjoy the financial benefits of being your own boss. Alternatively, you could use your mediation skills in a variety of other job roles, including:
- Management
- Customer service
- Sales
- Counselling and psychology
- Education
- Law enforcement
