Career Prospects
Dental care is a crucial element of healthcare, so there will always be a strong demand for individuals with skills in this specialist area. An increasing range of cosmetic dental treatments is also available, increasing demand within the sector. While dentists may be at the forefront of providing care, they couldn’t function effectively without reliable dental assistants and chair-side assistants.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of dental assistants is expected to grow by 11% by 2030.
What do dental assistants do?
Dental assistants assist in dentistry procedures such as teeth cleaning, whitening, root canals, fillings, crowns, and extractions, as well as dental office management. They often take care of patients’ dental hygiene needs, prepare them for treatment, and assist them during treatment. Working as a dentist’s second pair of hands, you will perform tasks such as sterilising dental instruments, passing instruments to the dentist as required during procedures, exposing dental radiographs, conducting x-rays, fabricating provisional crowns and taking impressions and moulds.
Working as a dental assistant is a hugely rewarding job. You have the satisfaction of knowing you make a real difference to people’s quality of life. It is also a varied role.
