Career Prospects
There are many diverse opportunities within the horticultural industry. Roles often require outdoor work, and in addition to knowledge of horticulture itself, skills in areas such as design, science, planning, and management are usually highly valued.
According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), there are many opportunities across horticulture. Like so many other industries, as your skills and experience grow, your salary potential grows, too.
Career opportunities include:
Arboriculture
This involves cultivating trees, woody plants, and shrubs. Associated tasks include propagating, pruning, fertilising, and controlling pests.
Design
Garden designers create spaces that are both practical and attractive. They often work to specific briefs provided by clients and on sites ranging from private gardens to botanic gardens, public parks and reserves.
Landscapers
The landscaping business is thriving as homeowners seek to make the most of their outdoor spaces. Garden landscape constructions often provide a wide variety of services, such as turfing, planting, and pruning, as well as laying patios, decking, walkways, and driveways.
Nurseries
Growing plants is foundational to horticulture, and nurseries are where this occurs. The plants grown may be intended for transplanting, used as stock for grafting and budding or sold to the public.
Sports turf management or greenkeeping
This specialism refers to the growing and maintaining special grasses for sports facilities such as football and cricket pitches and golf courses.
Amenity horticulture
This subsector is concerned with using horticulture to create environments or facilities that are useful to the community. These include public spaces such as parks and sports grounds, commercial places (industrial estates and shopping centres), natural landscapes, home gardens, indoor environments and other spaces.
You might want to work for an existing company in horticulture or start your own company. There are opportunities to pursue practical experience, which can be easily acquired in this industry.
