9 Careers That Won’t Trap You in an Office

ICI UK - Careers That Wont Trap You in an Office

If the idea of being trapped in an office from 9-5 is something you find to be completely intolerable, we’ve got some good news for you: there are plenty of well-paid jobs out there that don’t require you to sit between the confine of 4 walls every day. Ready to get out of the office? Have a read of these 9 careers that won’t trap you at a desk all day.

1. Real estate

The life of a real estate agent is rarely spent sitting at a desk, as you’re forever on the road doing appraisals, inspections, showings or meeting with potential sellers and buyers. Your job as a real estate agent is to establish and expand your client base and you must be front and centre to do that, and although there is administrative work involved, your time spent at the office versus being out and about is well-balanced.

2. Hospitality

Hospitality is an ideal career choice for someone who’s social and likes being part of a team but doesn’t want to be confined to an office. It offers a broad catalogue of fields meaning that throughout your career you could work in restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels, gyms, recreation facilities, at theme parks or on cruise ships. If variety is the aim of your game, a career in hospitality is a great choice.

3. Horticulture

It doesn’t get much more outdoorsy than a career in horticulture, which literally means the art or practice of garden cultivation. Whether your focus is on arboriculture (the care and management of urban trees), design, landscaping, nursery plant growing, sports turf management or turfgrass research, most of your activities will require you to work outside.

4. Zoology

No 7-year-old kid dreams of being an office worker when they grow up. They instead dream of exciting careers like being a zookeeper. Why not make that childhood dream a reality?

If you have an intense love of animals, being a zookeeper is an excellent career choice. You get to care for a whole range of animals, maintain their enclosures and the preparation of food, make detailed observations and keep animal records, and assist in the capture and restraint of animals. If you can’t find work as a zookeeper, you can find positions in veterinary clinics, animal impound centres, animal protection agencies, animal hospitals and in national parks.

5. Sports Management

Qualified sports managers can find employment in a broad range of positions, including event management firms, player management firms, recreation and leisure clubs, sports marketing firms, professional sports leagues and sporting goods organisations. You might be in charge of making sure an individual athlete performs at their best or you might be tasked with being a team’s spokesperson. Either way, your tasks will be varied and while there will be some time spent in the office, there will be plenty of time spent on the field, court or track, too.

6. Personal Training

A personal trainer’s job is not to sit behind a desk and bark orders. A personal trainer must get to know their client in the real world so that they can identify goals and create a tailored plan for achieving those goals. Daily duties might include showing a client around a gym facility before showing them some of the workouts they could do. You could also find yourself boxing in a park, running a bootcamp on the beach or dragging office workers outside for a lunchtime stretch session.

7. Wedding Planner

Weddings happen at the most exquisite and spectacular venues and as a wedding planner it will be your job to go and inspect them. You’ll also need to be on the constant lookout for florists, bands, caterers, dressmakers, event hire firms, photographers and more. Because wedding trends come and go, every day will be different, just as every couple will be different.

8. Nannying

Being a nanny means you never even have to set foot in an office and that the most writing you’ll ever do is when helping a child learn their ABCs. Typical duties include feeding, washing and dressing children, supervising play and learning activities, developing and maintaining appropriate routines, safeguarding children against potential hazards, taking kids to school, day care and after-school activities or play dates, and planning and preparing nutritious snacks.

Graduating from a cooking and catering course will position you for an industry and profession which has consistently grown each year since 1998. You could work for a restaurant or food service company, a cafe or in events, preparing and serving food, setting and clearing tables, staffing bars, attending diners needs, and planning menus.
